Mr. Josiah Bounderby Character Analysis

Mr Josiah bounderby is man perfectly devoid of sentiment. He is described as a rich man:”banker merchant manufacturer and what not he is a big loud man with a stair and a metallic love he is a man made out of course material.”he is a year or two younger than his eminently practical friend Thomas Gradgrind, bing 47 aur 48 years old. Bounderby according to the author is the” bully of humility”. He is a boastful man who is in the habit of boasting of his humble birth and efforts by which he rose to his present position. Despite his many handicaps and boasting about his bringing up. He says that he did not even have a shoot his foot as to a shocked stocking he did not know much a thing by name. He passed his days as a child in a ditch and his Nights in a pigsty.4 years she tells Mrs Gradgrind he was one of the most miserable little richest ever seen and the worst old woman that ever lived. A vagabond, an errand boy, a labourer a porter, a clerk, chief manager, a small partner this is what he was as a boy and as a young mentally attend his present position as Josiah Bounderby of Coketown.

Bounderby is not a sentimental person at all this is the reason why he supposed to gradgrind taking Sissy’s under his protection when it is found that Sissy’s father has run away and forsaken her. He is also arrogant towards his workmanexpresses the view that this workmen want ” to ride in a coach drawn by 6 horses and to be paid on turtle soup and mention with a gol spoon.”kis treatment of the workmen shows a mechanical mind he looks upon the work man as so many hundred hands, so many hundred horse steam power.

The manner in which he deals with Stephen fully e portrays his contempt and his utter lack of sympathy for the workmen. When Stephen refuses to act as an informal against the workers Union bounderby dismiss him as a man who will create trouble wherever he happens to be. as a husband.

Bounderby also is proud of the aristocratic background of Mrs Boundedby. He is also a stupid husband. In the first place he should have never married Lisa who was nearly thirty years younger than him. Having married her he hardly knows, how he should treat her. After being informed by Gradgrind that Lisa has consented to marry him, boundary makes love to her in the form of bracelets and all the occasion during their period of his bethrotal.

In other words, bounderby adopts a matter of fact attitude towards louisa, never once bothering to find out if Lewis has any feelings and sentiments. When you find that Louis has run away with hot house, he feels shocked that such an important man as he should be thus treated by his wife. This shows his negligence sparsit,”just as it belong to his boastfulness to depreciate his extraction, so it belong to it exalt Mrs. Sparsit’s.”

in other words, he boasts of his humble background to Mrs Sparsit, he always speaks without reserve, it is always solicitors about her comfort and well being.which according to him she is entitled to.but a time comes when boundary finds it is absolutely necessary to get rid of MRS sparsit.regarding his wife elopement is incorrect. Later when she displaces him by bringing MRS pegler to his house he decides to dispense with the services of MRS sparsit, and actually dismisses her. bounderby is exposed as a perfect fraud when it is found that he had never been abandoned as a child by his mother and had never been left in the charge of a drunken grandmother.

Mrs pegler, his mother, stoutly defend herself against the charge that she had abandoned her son Josiah. As for his grandmother, she had actually died before josiah was ever born. bounded bi is also a very bad judge which is very much evident when he marries Louisa. Also does him no credit at all that He readily believes that charge of robbery against Stephen and continues to believe it till it is stablished that Stephen was innocent.he went disbelief rachel’s story that Mrs bounderby had paid Stephen a visit to 3 days before Stephen’s departure from coketown.visit only went Louis herself confirms it.wrong in this believing rachel’s version.

In the concluding chapter of the novel Joshua bounderby of coketown ultimately dies of a fit in a street in coke town. The news of the date of this odious hateful man does not produce the least regret in our minds.
